99 Questions to Ask Your Girlfriend
· 8 min read
If you have been together a while, the questions you have not asked are not the intimate ones. Those get asked early, usually in the first few months, when everything is still being established.
The ones that go unasked for years are duller and more consequential: whether she actually likes the way you two split the housework, whether the thing you do that she once teased you about is genuinely fine, whether she has been carrying something at work that you have been nodding along to without hearing.
The pattern worth naming is this. Most men in long relationships are operating on a model of their partner that was accurate three years ago and has not been updated since, because updating it requires asking questions whose answers you assume you already know.
The assumptions worth checking
Start here. Each of these is something a large number of men are confidently wrong about.
- Do you feel the division of work at home is fair?
- Would you say so if it were not?
- Is there something you do that you think I have not noticed?
- Is there something I do that you have decided to tolerate?
- Do you actually enjoy the way we spend weekends?
- Is there a plan you have gone along with that you did not want?
- When I ask "is everything okay", do you answer honestly?
- What would make you say yes when you mean no?
- Do you feel you can be in a bad mood around me without managing it?
- Is there a subject you avoid because of how I react?
- Do you feel I listen or wait to speak?
- Have I ever dismissed something that mattered to you?
- Do you think I know what you do all day?
- Do you think I know what you are worried about this month?
- Am I right about what you want from the next few years?
About her, now rather than then
- What is taking most of your energy at the moment?
- What are you better at than you were a year ago?
- What have you stopped caring about?
- What do you want more of that is not money or time?
- What is something you are proud of that has nothing to do with me?
- What are you working towards?
- What has been the best month of this year for you?
- What has been the worst, and did I know at the time?
- Is there something you have wanted to try and not mentioned?
- What would you do with a completely free week?
- Who have you become close to recently?
- Who have you drifted from?
- What do you do when you have an evening alone?
- Do you get enough of those?
- What do you think you will care about at forty that you do not now?
Her work and her mind
Frequently the biggest blind spot, and the easiest to fix.
- What does your job actually involve day to day?
- Could I describe it to someone accurately?
- Who is difficult at work and why?
- What are you good at there that nobody notices?
- Do you want to be doing this in five years?
- What would you do instead if it were free to switch?
- Is there something you are being asked to do that you should not be?
- Do you feel respected there?
- What is the last thing you learned that interested you?
- What do you think about when you are not thinking about anything?
- What is a topic you could talk about for an hour?
- What do you read or watch that you assume I would not be interested in?
- What is an opinion you hold that would surprise me?
- What is something you have changed your mind about recently?
- What do you wish I asked you about more?
Family and history
- Which parent are you more like, and how do you feel about that?
- What was your family like at dinner?
- What did you need as a teenager that you did not get?
- Who understood you best growing up?
- What is a story about your family I have not heard?
- What is a thing your mother says that you catch yourself saying?
- Are you where your family expected you to be?
- Does that matter to you?
- What would you do differently as a parent?
- Who in your family are you most protective of?
- Is there anyone in your family who worries you?
- What do your family actually think of me?
- Would you tell me if it were bad?
- What do your closest friends think of me?
- Same question.
The relationship
- When did you last feel really close to me?
- What was happening then?
- What do I do that makes you feel looked after?
- What have I stopped doing that I used to do?
- Do you miss it?
- What is something small I could do this week?
- What is a compliment you want and do not get?
- Do you feel wanted?
- Do you think I feel wanted?
- Is there anything about us you would change if it cost nothing?
- What do you think we are best at?
- What do we avoid?
- Have you ever felt lonely in this relationship?
- Would you tell me at the time or afterwards?
- What is the thing you would find hardest to say to me?
Affection and how she wants it
- Would you rather be helped or thanked?
- Is public affection comfortable or not?
- Do gifts mean anything to you, honestly?
- What is the best thing I have ever given you, and why that one?
- What do you want more of physically that is not leading anywhere?
- Do you feel I notice when you have made an effort?
- What do you want said out loud that I assume you already know?
- Is there something you would like me to initiate more?
- Is there something you would rather I initiated less?
- How do you want to be comforted when you are upset — held, left alone, or talked to?
- Have I got that right so far?
- What did affection look like in your family?
- What do you want that you have never asked for because it felt small?
- What would make an ordinary Tuesday feel good?
- What is one thing that would make you feel appreciated this month?
The ones worth asking once a year
- Are you happy?
- Not "are we okay" — are you?
- Is there anything you are waiting for me to notice?
- What do you need from me in the next six months?
- Is there a decision we are both avoiding?
- What do you want that you think I will say no to?
- Where do you want to be in three years, specifically?
- Have your answers to any of that changed recently?
- Would you tell me if they had?
- Is there anything you have not said because there was never a good moment?
Why the answers change when nobody is watching
There is a well-documented gap between what people say in conversation and what they write down alone, and it is not about honesty. In conversation you can see the other person's face, and you adjust in real time — softening the answer that would land badly, expanding the one that got a good reaction. Everybody does it and nobody notices doing it.
Which means the most useful version of a list like this is one you both answer separately and compare afterwards.
PairReveal is built around exactly that gap. Answers are written alone and only the shared ones surface, so an honest answer costs nothing — which is the reason people give one. Start free, or read the affection and appreciation set.
Answer these apart, on two phones, and see only where you both landed the same way.
