95 Deep Questions for Couples
· 9 min read
There is a particular kind of silence that settles into a long relationship. Not an unhappy one — you still talk constantly, about the shopping and the weekend and what someone said at work. It is just that at some point you stopped finding things out about each other, because you both assumed there was nothing left to find.
There usually is. People change without announcing it, and the questions that would surface the change are the ones nobody asks at dinner, because asking them out of nowhere sounds like the opening of a serious conversation neither of you was planning to have.
These are sorted by cost. The first sections are answerable over a meal. The last ones are not, and should not be attempted first.
How to use them
Pick five, not fifty. A list like this is a menu, not a curriculum, and working through it methodically turns an interesting evening into an interview.
Answer your own question before they answer it. It changes what you get back — the person going second matches the depth of the person going first, so if you give a short answer you will receive one.
And leave silences alone. The most useful thing in this entire list is the pause after a question that landed, and the reflex to fill it is what stops most couples getting anything out of an exercise like this.

Things that are hard to say
Do not start here. These work only once the earlier sections have gone well, and they are worth stopping at any point if either of you wants to.
- What are you afraid of, about us?
- Is there something you have been waiting for the right moment to tell me?
- What do you think I would be most surprised to learn about how you feel?
- Have you ever felt lonely inside this relationship?
- When have you doubted this, and what happened to the doubt?
- Is there a version of your life you sometimes think about that does not include me?
- What is the thing you would find hardest to forgive?
- Have I ever hurt you in a way I did not notice?
- What do you need me to stop doing?
- Do you think we would say the same things about our worst argument?
- Is there a subject you feel you cannot raise with me?
- What would make you leave?
- Do you think I know you as well as you know me?
- What have you given up for this that you do not regret, and one that you do?
- What do you want from the next ten years that you have not said out loud?
Meaning
- What do you want your life to have been for?
- What would you want said about you by someone who knew you well?
- What do you believe happens after this, if anything?
- What is the closest thing you have to a rule you will not break?
- What do you owe your family, and what do you not?
- What do you owe strangers?
- What do you want to be true of you at seventy?
- What would you be willing to be poorer for?
- What is worth being disliked over?
- What have you changed your mind about that mattered?
- What do you think you are here to do, if anything?
- What is the best thing you have ever done for someone else?
- What do you find beautiful that other people do not notice?
- What are you grateful for that you never mention because it is obvious?
- What would you regret not having said?
Hypotheticals that reveal something real
Lighter in tone, but the answers tend to be honest — the frame gives people permission.
- If we had to move abroad in three months, where and why?
- If money stopped being a constraint tomorrow, what would you actually do on a Tuesday?
- If you could know one fact about your future, would you, and which?
- If we could relive one week together, which?
- If you could remove one worry permanently, which one?
- If I could understand one thing about you instantly, what should it be?
- If you had to teach something for a year, what?
- If we had to start over somewhere nobody knew us, would you want to?
- If you could send one sentence to yourself at twenty, what would it say?
- If you could ask me one question and be guaranteed an honest answer, what is it?
What tends to happen
Two things, fairly reliably.
The first is that the answers you can predict are less interesting than you expect, and there are fewer of them than you expect. Most couples get through a list like this and find three or four places where they were confidently wrong about the other person — not about anything dramatic, usually about what the other one wants or worries about.
The second is that the conversation is not the same as the answers. What matters afterwards is whether either of you follows up on something a week later. A question asked once and never returned to is entertainment; a question that changes what you notice about each other is the point.
For the deeper sections in particular, there is a strong case for writing rather than speaking. PairReveal is built that way: sealed answers, a simultaneous reveal, and anything only one of you said stays unsaid.
Answer these apart, on two phones, and see only where you both landed the same way.
