105 Questions to Ask Your Boyfriend
· 8 min read
The complaint is almost always the same shape: I ask him things and he gives me nothing.
Sometimes that is avoidance. More often it is the question. "How was your day" is a closed question wearing an open question's clothes — it has an acceptable one-word answer, so it gets one. "Are you okay" is worse, because "yeah" is not just acceptable, it is the socially correct response, and asking it repeatedly trains a reflex rather than opening anything.
The questions below are built to be hard to answer in one word. Not heavier — just more specific. "What was the most annoying part of today" gets an answer where "how was your day" does not, because it asks for a fact rather than a summary.
Instead of "how was your day"
- What was the most annoying part of today?
- Who did you talk to that you actually enjoyed?
- What is the thing you did not get done?
- What is waiting for you tomorrow that you are not looking forward to?
- Did anything go better than expected?
- What did you eat?
- Was there a point today where you wanted to leave?
- What is the stupidest thing that happened?
- Did anyone irritate you?
- What are you still thinking about from today?
Instead of "are you okay"
Each of these is harder to answer with "fine" than the question it replaces.
- What is taking up the most room in your head right now?
- Is it work, us, family, or something else?
- Do you want to talk about it or think about something else?
- Would it help to say the worst version of it out loud?
- Do you want advice or do you want me to agree with you?
- Is there something you have been putting off telling me?
- What would help right now, specifically?
- Have you been sleeping properly?
- When did you last feel like yourself?
- What is the thing you would fix first if you could fix one?
About what he thinks
Men are frequently asked how they feel and rarely asked what they think, and the second question gets far more.
- What is something you believe that most people you know do not?
- What have you changed your mind about this year?
- What do you think you are wrong about but have not adjusted yet?
- What is a problem you keep turning over?
- What would you do differently if you started your career again?
- What is the best decision you have made?
- What is a risk you did not take and think about?
- What do you think you are underrated at?
- What do you think you are overrated at?
- What is something you know a lot about that never comes up?
- What is a subject you could talk about for an hour?
- What is the most interesting thing you have read recently?
- What do you think people misread about you?
- Who do you admire that I have never met?
- What would you want to be good at if effort were free?
His life outside this
- What is your job actually like day to day?
- What part of it do you like?

Family and where he came from
- What was your house like growing up?

- Who was the first adult who took you seriously?
- What did your family expect of you?
- Did you meet it?

Feelings, asked in a way that works
Not "how do you feel" — specific, concrete, answerable.
- What is the last thing that genuinely made you happy?
- When did you last feel proud of yourself?
- What are you afraid of that you have never said out loud?
- What is the most stressed you have been in the last year?
- Did I know at the time?
- What do you do when you are struggling?
- Do you tell anyone?
- Would you tell me?
- What stops you?
- What do you need when you are low — space, distraction, or company?
- Have I got that right?
- When have you cried in the last few years?
- What is something you have not forgiven yourself for?
- What is the kindest thing anyone has done for you?
- What do you wish someone had said to you at a particular moment?
Us
- What did you first notice about me?
- When did you know?
- What do you think I am best at?
- What do I do that makes your life easier?
- What do I do that makes it harder?
- Is there something you want from me that you have not asked for?
- Why have you not asked?
- Do you feel able to raise things with me?
- Is there a topic you avoid because of how I react?
- When did you last feel distant from me?
- Have you ever felt lonely in this?
- What do you think we should do more of?
- What do you think I worry about too much?
- What do you want the next few years to look like?
- Is there anything about that you have not told me?
The ones that need a good moment
- Is there anything you have been waiting for the right time to say?
- What would you find hardest to tell me?
- Is there something you think I would not handle well?
- Would you try me?
- What do you need from me that you think is unreasonable to ask?
- Is there a version of your future that does not include this?
- What would make you pull away?
- What would you want me to do if you did?
- What are you most afraid of about us?
- What do you want me to know that I do not?
Two things that make any of these work better
Ask one, not eight. A list read out in sequence is an interview, and the correct response to an interview is short answers. Pick one, ask it, and then stop talking for longer than is comfortable. The pause is where the answer comes from.
Answer it yourself first. Whoever goes first sets the depth. If you want more than a sentence, give more than a sentence — this is the single most reliable thing you can change, and it works immediately.
Or remove the dynamic altogether. On PairReveal nobody is put on the spot and nobody is reading a face while deciding what to say — the questions are fixed and the answers stay sealed until you have both finished. The communication and conflict set is closest to the sections above.
Answer these apart, on two phones, and see only where you both landed the same way.
